The apartment tour
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 | By German - 1 comments
I've been sick for the past couple of days which lead me to a hermitic existence for recovery purposes. In the meanwhile I would like to present you with a tour around my apartment till I can get some nice shots of the city.

My "romantic" view of the outside world

The wooden floors are slippery enough to go sock-skating on

The bed is pretty much my studio, I draw on it all the time

The only means of contact with the outside world at the moment...

There you have it! A simple tour from a simple guy. I hope this suffices while I recover.

El Ateneo

The classy entrance to El Ateneo

The first thing I noticed over here was just how many bookstores there were in my neighbourhood. I live beside a bookstore which is a store down from another bookstore next to a bookstore. Well, this trend was not limited to just my neighbourhood, There are book stores everywhere in Argentina!! It's insane, you can't escape them!

The crown jewel of these stores is El Ateneo in el barrio norte. Originally opened at 1919 as a theather, it experinced a new lease on life in 2000 when it was renevoted as a bookstore and cafe. The result is a chapters/broders-esque bookstore with a proud and rich cultural heritage and one of my favorite in the city.

the interior maintains the classical facade and elegant feel of the original theater

Journey to Argentina
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 | By German - 0 comments

Driving to the airport in Amy's car.

Preflight jitters
Three months of planning, three months of saving and another three months of anticipation yet the reality of the situation only hit me the morning that I'm leaving. I am going to be a thousand miles away from home in a strange country. I woke up an emotional cocktail. The ride to the airport felt as long as the 12-hour journey ahead.

The dramatic sky over miami foreshadowing my time there

What the hell am I doing?
The flight to Miami was unremarkable. I sat by myself and passed the time by occupying myself with an airline magazine. As soon as I hit MIA things took a turn for the worst. I got lost several times by directionless employees. Any attempts to contact my family was blocked by the broken public phones. I was hungry, dehydrated and had a killer headache. All that was running through my head was what the hell am I doing. I left some comfortable digs to go through this crap, there better be a good reason for this.

Arriving at Buenos Aires first thing at dawn

First day in Buenos Aires
No matter what you read or how much research you do, there is nothing that can prepare you for reality. Any romantic notion I had was quickly dashed. I got to my apartment feeling defeated, home sick and tired. Somehow, I picked up the pieces of my broken self and decided to get to know my new neighbourhood and set out to buy some groceries. The streets were very lively and filled with tons of character, I felt my energy slowly return. After what must have been hours of walking I got back feeling a little better and made myself a simple dinner of steak and sauteed spinach. I stayed in the rest of the night.
